Book: Unofficial Release: Self-Released and Handmade Audio In Post-Industrial Society by Thomas Bey William Bailey

Just finished reading this book: "Unofficial Release: Self-Released and Handmade Audio in Post-Industrial Society"! What an excellent book! Thomas Bey William Bailey delves into where (Self-released handmade audio) got started, who some of the major contributors were, how it influenced current trends in self-released audio, and where it's going (and if it's still relevant)! Here's the blurb on the back:

"The culture of self-released music and sound art is one of the most vital, yet most overlooked, phenomena resulting from the 20th century revolution in communications technology. In this volume, Thomas Bailey surveys a fascinating realm of creative activity and identifies the key individuals and developments responsible for its continued relevance in the present age. From the networked "mail art" of the 1970s, to the home-taping boom, to the establishment of music labels dealing solely in digital sound files, this culture provides valuable insight into the evolution of the "official" art market and the artists who bypass it. Along the way, we are introduced to a world where networks are artworks in themselves, where blank tapes and recordable CDs are fashioned into elaborate objects, and where relative freedom from creative supervision leads to both colorful innovations and violent aesthetic extremes."

If any of you are interested in "unofficial releases" or "self-released audio" I would highly suggest reading this book!

Thoughts On The Current State Of The World (2017)

Well, every time I log onto Facebook or just look at the news, there is this sense of dread… like, I’m expecting the things the current U.S. president says or does to be gradually getting worse… To be honest, every time I see the daily bullshit, I’m always saying to myself… “What next..?”… We all know the current U.S. president is an idiot… we were all surprised when he won the election and then the Electoral College didn’t vote him out! Now, there’s a threat of nuclear war looming over our heads, cause of the shit that comes out of his mouth… there’s this obvious tension surrounding all of the world right now… A lot of the time, I’m wondering if my efforts and everyone else’s efforts to make the world a better place are actually working… A lot of the time, I’m wondering… will he get impeached (and if he does, will it be any better… we know who will take his place)… A lot of the time, I’m wondering if waiting this out (till the end of his term) is the right answer… I’m actually surprised that he hasn’t been impeached yet… like, what are they waiting for… he is obviously taking the U.S. down into a shit hole… granted the U.S. used to be a world superpower… still is, but I feel like every time he opens his mouth and says something ridiculously stupid he’s digging this giant hole for the country… and making the U.S. a laughing fucking joke to the rest of the world… Granted, I’m not a U.S. citizen… I am a Canadian… but now that this whole situation has arisen and it’s really affecting the world (the nuclear threat from North Korea) it’s hard not to say anything… I dread every day looking on FB or seeing news on various sites and to see that some other fucking drama has started (cause he’s said or done something really fuckin stupid!)… Too be honest, I try and avoid the news (I always have [way too much negativity, and not enough positivity]), but a lot of the time now, it’s really hard… I feel I’m almost forced to look at it now, cause I want to know if there is going to be a world to wake up to in the morning. Sometimes, I think “am I doing enough?”… Sometimes I feel helpless... and “how the fuck did the world get into this situation..?”…I don’t know… what do you guys feel about this situation?

P.S: By the way, I do feel it is important to donate time/money to a charity or cause that you feel is worthy, cause I do think every little action helps, but some of the time I wonder if it’s enough, is there more I could be doing..?

What are your thoughts?

Movie: Ghost In The Shell (2017)

Well, I finally had a chance to watch the new Ghost In The Shell live action movie. Well, at first I thought the movie was decent, but they definitely dumbed down the concepts and themes though... for instance they talk about robotics instead of cybernetics... I'm sure they did that cause they wanted the "general" public to understand what was going on in the movie, but I feel they should have not done that... I don't think they gave the audience a chance to think about what's going on. The plot was interesting, but I think from what I gathered from the story, they have 4 different stories combined into one... they have elements from the original anime (which is a highly truncated version of the original manga) They also have a bunch of stuff from the Stand Alone Complex anime series (which is not actually a part of the original story) and I think if I remember correctly they have pieces of the G.I.T.S: Arise series where in that story it's more about Motoko trying to figure out who she is and how she ended up joining Section 9 (which is also not part of the original story). Out of all honesty, I think if they were trying to make the movie good and successful, they should have stuck with a live action version of the original G.I.T.S anime movie... I think it would have done much better than the story(s) they used for this movie. I'm sure they tried to set this up for sequels if it did well... but I don't think that is going to happen because it failed at the box office... The more I think about the movie, the worse I think it is... I really do think they should have stuck to the original anime movie... or even the original manga (they totally could've stretched it into a multiple movie series)... and they shouldn't have dumbed it down... I guess the whole other issue, that everyone knows is the whitewashing shit... apparently Japanese fans loved that Scarlett Johansson was casted as Motoko, to be honest I'm on the fence about it... I think they probably should have cast a Japanese actress, but there's also the logic that... her body is just a shell, and she can look like pretty much whatever she wants to... if I remember correctly, there was no mention anywhere in the original manga that she was Japanese... but like I said they probably should have cast her as Japanese... I'm sure the producers and directors chose Scarlett cause they wanted to hopefully appeal to a much larger and wider audience... which we know how that went... the movie failed. So...will I recommend this movie... Yes! The reason being is, I look at this movie as another piece of fanfic... it may not be the original story, it may not even be related to the other pieces of fanfic out there, but... it is visually stunning and it is a different take on the story of Motoko and Section 9. What do you think?

Local Gig: Reckless Heroes Farewell Show w/No More Moments and Purity+Control: August 18th/2017

Well, went to this show... not for the main band, but for one of the openers... Purity+Control (I am only gonna write about Purity+Control, cause quite frankly, not really interested in punk/pop-punk type bands) I have known of this project for quite some time (was originally asked to do live vocals for it, but had to turn the offer down [Twitch is my main and only project])! This performance was their second one. The band currently consists of two members: Jordan Gioplasty (vocals/lyrics), and Slava Nartakhov (backing tracks/synths/samples/sequences/lyrics). The music is in the style of EBM! If I were to compare their sound to another band, their performance reminded me of Skinny Puppy (especially the vocals), mixed with the hard driving beats of EBM! Their set wasn't quite an all hardware set, they did use a laptop for some of the backing tracks, but from what I'm told they are going to be moving away from that... It did seem they mainly used their synths and samplers for most of their set, only relying on the laptop when it was absolutely necessary! I think their set consisted of a cover of a Tekhnotron song as well as a Detached Objectives cover plus a couple of originals (Slava can correct me if I'm wrong)! Anyway, they played an excellent set! Can't wait to play with them in November!!

PurityControl Facebook

P.S.: Not sure when they are going to release something... from what I understand they may be working on an EP or something like that... I'll let you know on a future date (I'll probably be posting it as a future IMM post)!

Concert: VNV Nation w/iVardensphere (Singularity): August 12th/2017

Well, attended the VNV Nation show, here in Calgary, at Dickens Pub, this past Saturday (August 12th/2017)!

iVardensphere opened up the show with a "Singularity" set (just him on synths)! Of course, iVardensphere put on an excellent show! I really love his "Singularity" sets... just seeing him play sequences from his drum machines/synths etc.! We did get to see him perform recently at Terminus fest with Borys, but that's ok! His set was obviously different than the iV vs Borys set at Terminus, and it was a lot crunchier!! I think Scott was on for 35-40 minutes... I could completely be wrong on this... but it was a nice good, quick set! Obviously, people in the crowd were still coming down from Terminus... I'm sure many of them with post-Terminus blues, but people really wanted to dance... and seemed to be excited that a show was happening so soon after Terminus (also, it's a VNV show... so people are gonna come out anyway)!

VNV Nation took the stage as a four person live show! Obviously, Ronan at the front and three others (two as keys and one on drums in the back [Unfortunately, Mark Jackson was not on this tour with Ronan {not sure why}, but still a pretty good performance overall])! Ronan is a charismatic frontman, always engaging the audience! I love VNV! They were my first industrial show a couple of years after I came back from London, UK! They had played Edmonton the very first time I saw them! At that point in time, they were touring for the 'Futureperfect' album, and they put on an amazing show, and... the status-quo still stands... VNV always put on an amazing show! This time they were touring select small club shows (normally they play much larger venues), and they were playing select songs off the 'Automatic' and 'Empires' albums! Overall, it was an excellent show! If there is one thing I have to say about this show that isn't good, I would have to say, it seemed to be a little quiet in the bar... I feel like, if you were to compare the sound to Terminus, the PA system was much louder. This time, especially during iVardensphere's set I felt it was a little too quiet... and the sub-bass was not really punching through my chest (could also hear everyone's conversations really well, which to me is not a good thing... like I said, I should be able to feel the sub-bass punching me in the chest)! It did get a little better during VNV's set but, I still feel I shouldn't have to stand next to the PA so I could feel the sub-bass! Anyway, that's my only complaint... the performances were excellent! Had a great time with friends! Ran into some old friends that I hadn't seen in a while! And, was pretty drunk by the end of it!

P.S.: We are very lucky shit like this happens here in Calgary! It used to be... shows like this would only happen in Edmonton (they had a quite dedicated scene way back in the day), now that has changed... The only way this shit can continue to happen, is if you guys continue to support the scene! Go to these shows! Go to Terminus! Go to local goth/industrial DJ nights and support your local goth/industrial bands shows! The scene you want, is the scene you make!

Festival: Terminus: Impact 2017

Another year, another Terminus (now in it's 6th year)! I have attended every single year... the past years have had many good acts! This year has been no exception! Some of the acts I was looking forward to were Cubanate, PIG, VOWWS, Assemblage 23, and some were surprises (HAEX, Wire Spine, and The Blood Of Others)!

The Blood Of Others: These guy's were a surprise to me, they opened up Terminus, they kinda remind me a little bit of Wumpscut (Dried Blood of Gomorhha era [which is probably my favorite]) but maybe a bit more melodic! I didn't get any pictures of them, but here is their album on bandcamp:

Their live show was much noiser than their album, but was still good!

VOWWS: After VOWWS was announced for Terminus, I immediately went and sought out their music! Excellent stuff! I especially like their song "Heartbreaker"! They put on an excellent performance... and many of you know already, for me I find I prefer the live performances over recorded/albums and shit... I find the live performances add a quality to the sound that recorded albums cannot articulate... VOWWS was no exception... I found I liked their live stuff over their studio recordings!

Cubanate: This was the band I went to primarily see at the festival, and they did not disappoint! They were everything I expected; high energy, screamy, breakbeats and all that shit! Their live drummer was pretty amazing too! We were fortunate that Cubanate was doing a reunion tour! Will they put out a new album in the future... don't think so, but if they do, I'll definitely be purchasing it!

HAEX: This band was screamy with occult themes... Not really into the occult stuff, but still pretty good... from what I can tell, their recorded stuff is not as screamy as the live stuff.

Here's their new song "BLOODTOLL":

Assemblage 23: What can I say, Tom always puts on a good show!

Here's a link to the new album on Bandcamp:

WIRE SPINE: This band really surprised me... they have that old school EBM vibe, but the vocals are very noisy! Their set was very good! Very noisy!

PIG: Unfortunately, PIG had to cancel their set due to VISA issues (not getting them in time for the show), but En Esch and most of the band were already there, so En Esch and the other members stepped in to take PIG's place (Eric Gottesman also stepped in on keys for the show at the last minute, as well)! The show was excellent! It's unbelievable that they could throw something like this together at last minute and still pull off a really good show!

They played songs from KMFDM, En Esch, and I think a PIG song there or two!

That's it, those were the highlights/surprises for me! I think this years Terminus did much better than last years... or well, at least it seemed to! As far as, bands and acts that played this year, I feel this year may not have been as solid as previous years, but over all it was pretty good! It is really quite surprising what Chris Hewitt and Ambor Sheppard pull together each year for Terminus! What do you guy's think? Who were your favorites? Who were your surprises?

Movie: After Earth

Well, watched “After Earth”, with Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith… it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either… the plot idea was cool, but I think the acting wasn’t very good, which is odd being that it’s Will Smith. Here’s the general description from IMDB.com:

“A crash landing leaves Kitai Raige and his father Cypher stranded on Earth, a millennium after events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help.”

Do I recommend..? I’d say skip it.

Not Enough!!

Well, I’m looking at my discography on Bandcamp, and I haven’t done enough! What I mean by that is… I would like there to be like 60 or 70 EPs/Albums there… As, some of you may know, I like being productive… and right now (yes I know I have one more single to release, and then the new album), I feel like I could do more… by the time I die I would like to see at least 40 albums in my discography, if not more (ideally more)! I feel like I’m getting started on my journey (I know…  I’ve been doing this since 1998-99… almost 20 years), there’s been a lot of time that I struggled between 1999–2004, and sometimes I look at that part of my life and wonder… how did I not know how to stay healthy..?; mentally, physically, and spiritually..? I spent a lot of time dealing with stupid bullshit! I cannot afford to do that anymore… Something I knew a long time ago; Life is very short! We have maybe 80 -100 years on this planet (100 if we’re super healthy, and diligent), and I cannot afford to struggle health-wise anymore! I am not going out with nothing to show for it!! So, on that note, I wanted to ask you, what are your thoughts on life? Are you doing enough?...or even, have you figured out what you want to do?

Movie: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows

Well, watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows, which is the second movie from the new TMNT movie franchise… it was ok! It was a throwback to the old cartoon with Beebop and Rocksteady, Casey Jones, April O’Neal, a return of The Shredder and The Foot Clan, and as well as Krang! (Baxter Stockman was in there too!) I liked it, it wasn’t the best… unfortunately it is not at all accurate to the original comic series, but it was still good fun! Basically, The Shredder and Krang try to take over the world… and you guessed it, the Turtles are there to stop it! Would I recommend..? If you are/were into the old TMNT cartoon, I would suggest checking this out… if you want something that is more closely related to the original comic, I suggest maybe take a pass!

Automatonism - Free Modular Synth Software

If any of you musicians out there are interested in Modular Synthesis but can't afford the price-tag on all the units, here is a free modular synthesis software called: Automatonism!

Here is a little blurb from Automatonism.com:

"Modular synthesis is akin to musical gardening: modules can spring to life and their interconnections suggest the formation of a sonic ecosystem. The act of patching is no different to playing any other instrument: it affords the opportunity to express oneself and directly engage with other people.

It is towards that goal of performability and communication that Automatonism was created. It mimics the signal flow of a physical modular but features dynamic preset management and advanced parameter mapping tools on an open source platform."

Here's a video:

You can get it here: automatonism.com

Psychotica: Self-Titled (1996)

Thought, I would do something a little different! Figured I would feature a band this week that I almost forgot about until very recently. They get credited with being a seminal influence on industrial/goth (I also found that they were quite glam as well) and I thought I would feature them cause it has been really interesting listening to them again, and finding I still like their sound! I ran across this band, when I was in my late teens (18 or so). I think I found out about them through some kind of magazine, they were sometimes compared to Marilyn Manson, not so much as scale and audience, but as far as shocking performances go... After, I read the article in the magazine and saw pictures of the lead singer, I was extremely curious to find out what they sound like! So, I bought their CD and listened through it, I immediately took a very strong liking to the song: Ice Planet Hell! Loved the drumming! Here's the blurb about them from discogs.com:

"Psychotica, formed in 1994 by Paul "ENA" Kostabi and NYC Club Owner Pat Briggs, were a seminal influence in Industrial Goth, releasing 3 albums to mixed reviews and varied success. Lead singer Pat Briggs, with outrageous costumes and antics, paved the way for the mainstream acceptance of androgynous musicians in bands like Orgy and Placebo. Psychotica's fame reached its pinnacle of popularity in 1996, as a result of being on the bill at Lollapalooza with Soundgarden, Ramones, Screaming Trees and Metallica. Shortly after the tour was finished Briggs moved to Los Angeles, he and Kostabi went in very different directions and eventually Psychotica was no more.

In the fall of 2008 Pat Briggs and Ena Kostabi, along with Enrique Tiru Velez, reunited and began working on the fourth Psychotica album."

Here's some videos of a couple of their songs (If you like them I would suggest purchasing their music!):

The Awakening

I don't know... what do you think? Do you think they were seminal industrial goth band..? Did they fly past your radar..? Comment Below!
